The mission of The Beacon Institute is to create a global center for interdisciplinary research, public policy and education regarding rivers, estuaries and their connection with society. The Beacon Institute is creating a center for excellence in the study of rivers and estuaries and a bold voice for applied knowledge toward policies and practices that benefit waterways and society alike. |
We pursue both leadership in applied science, social science, education and policy initiatives. The Institute was formed on the principle that solutions to environmental problems require a circle of consultation across disciplines and professions. In its earliest planning, the Institute identified higher education as its key partner in meeting its goals. For that reason, the Environmental Consortium of Hudson Valley Colleges and Universities was the first major program that it sponsored.
In our 35,000 square foot laboratory in Beacon, NY, the Center for Advanced Environmental Technology (breaking ground in 2008), we will incorporate a sustained and strategic link to public policy objectives with an emphasis on the development of high-technology that will significantly advance the way these ecosystems are studied, managed and taught.
Our current programs include Riverscope (distributed sensor networks for studies of the Hudson River), Learning Laboratory for K-12 teachers (launching in early 2007), River Culture (exploration of the vital connection between the human community and rivers and estuaries), and design of the Center for Advanced Environmental Technology.
