| MISSION STATEMENT |
The MES program was inaugurated approximately 15 years ago. The program revolves around 3 major components or areas: marine biology, oceanography and meteorology.
The current curriculum includes a general chemistry, physics, geology, biology, oceanography, meteorology, organic chemistry, environmental chemistry, marine biogeochemistry core with a required minor in either marine biology or meteorology & oceanography.
Prior to the MES program, Maritime College offered a B.S. in Meteorology and Oceanography which has been replaced by the MES degree program. The stduents fall into two categories: students studying for a license in the US Merchant Marine and traditional students seeking a 4-year college degree. For the first group, the goal of the program is to provide the students with an understanding of environmental issues and to make them more ecologically aware. For the second group of students, we aim to provide a rigorous program that serves as preparation for graduate study in environmental science, marine biology, meteorology or oceanography. |
